High Mountain Counseling & Training Institute, is a full service counseling agency spanning the breadth of clinical care, training, supervision and authorship involving the complex world of trauma, attachment and adoption, as well as more generalized mental health issues involving , couples, family and individuals. We are a group of highly skilled, innovative and pioneering clinicians committed to making a different in the lives of those in our communities.

Aaron J. Wiemeier is a licensed professional counselor with 20 years of experience in the mental health field and is a nationally recognized author, trainer and educator. He is an expert in the neurophysiology of trauma, attachment & adoption and has worked successfully with the most difficult of clients and with the most chaotic and conflictual systems. His pioneering work and program development has led to highly successful outcomes that increase permanency in least restrictive settings and ultimately reduce fiscal spending particularly in the mental health, educational and legal systems. In 2011, Aaron published a workbook titled, My Feelings Workbook, which teaches affect regulation, awareness and skill development on a nonverbal body level to children. The book was subsequently endorsed by well-established professionals in the trauma, attachment and Autism community. Aaron is also the Dean of Students at Littleton Preparatory Charter School in Littleton, CO, where he is pioneering the development of curriculum and programming that integrates education with the ever increasing mental health needs that plague public schools in the United States.

Craig McCullough – LPC

Craig McCullough is a licensed professional counselor with over 20 years of experience working with children, families, and adults. He has worked in a variety of settings that has led him to become a specialist in trauma-focused care and treating the spectrum of neurological differences from autism to ADHD and the broader spectrum. He is a nationally recognized trainer in this area as well as a PEERS certified provider. In addition, Craig enjoys working with his clients around various developmental challenges of their life events finding meaning in their unique narratives.

Kim Johancen – LPC


Kim Johancen is a licensed professional counselor with over twenty years of experience working with clients who have experienced trauma. Her career includes working with adolescent and adult survivors dealing with complicated grief and loss and including sexual trauma, relationship loss, individuals and families who have been impacted by suicide, and clients struggling with self-injury. In addition to seeing adolescents, adults, and families, Kim also has experience facilitating both small and large groups including crisis debriefings at local agencies in Durango, Colorado where she resided until recently. Kim has been invited to present at numerous conferences and seminars both locally and nationally and has presented her work on self-injury at Harvard University and her work with suicidal patients at Stony Brook University in New York after receiving invitations to share her work with well-known professionals in the field. In addition to her clinical work Kim has also been asked to contribute a chapter to Matthew Selekman's Adolescent and Young Adult Self-Harming Treatment Manual and has published over nine articles with the American Counseling Association. Kim currently has a column on the ACA website and continues to offer both counseling and consultation services to various agencies both nationally and locally.

Jen Thorstad – LPC

Jennifer Thorstad is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in attachment/adoption support, trauma narratives, anxiety and panic disorder, ADHD , depression and mood disorders in both children and adults. She is also a certified HeartMath practitioner and can utilize heart-rate variance biofeedback. Jennifer has a Master’s Degree in Counseling from UNC Charlotte and has experience counseling in various settings including outpatient therapy, enhanced mental health services for children and adolescents, and psychiatric emergency services.

Paul Roy – LCSW

Paul is a licensed social worker who specializes in couples and family therapy with a focus on EFT techniques that are centered in the Gottman Institutes research on relationships. He works predominately with young adults and couples in an office based setting. He has also taught family therapy techniques and skills at the University of Denver, supervising masters-leveled students at the University of Colorado, and provided clinical consultation for organizations such as the Kempe Center.
